Harburg county stands for quality of life between nature and metropolis. The district of Harburg in the south of the Hamburg Metropolitan Region offers its inhabitants an attractive environment for natural living and working in its cities and municipalities. It is particularly impressive because of its high quality of life: the immediate proximity to the economic and cultural metropolis of Hamburg and the beautiful cultural landscapes of the Lueneburg Heath and the Elbmarsch, which as traditional holiday regions attract tourists from Germany and abroad. 245,000 inhabitants live on a total area of 1,245km². Approximately 65,000 people commute to the Hanseatic city of Hamburg, which is quickly accessible via good transport connections by rail and road. As a business location, the district of Harburg has also gained strength and profile over the last decades. One of the advantages is the excellent traffic connection via the A1 and A7 motorways as well as the proximity to the economic metropolis Hamburg with its port economy and the aviation and vehicle industry. The economy of the county is characterized by many small and medium-sized enterprises and a high start-up dynamic. In recent years, the county has welcomed more than 3,000 refugees who are welcome in all cities and municipalities of the county.
